Welcome to Supermarket Nutrition! If you are here, I am hoping you are interested in making better choices at the supermarket. Supermarket Nutrition was started as a site to educate consumers about healthier food items at the grocery store and bring awareness to supermarket dietitians, innovative retailers and programs , and better for you brands. I believe what you put in your grocery cart impacts your health. I hope you will push your cart alongside mine down the aisle of better health.
Pushing the Cart
Betsy Ramirez, M.Ed., R.D., was one of only a handful of registered dietitians at the beginning of the supermarket nutrition program movement. She worked for one of the nation’s largest retailers building and branding a multi tiered marketing campaign, working directly with merchandisers to increase sales and a category by collaborating with produce and natural food manufacturers, such as Horizon Organic, Hain Celestials, Cascadian Farms, and Traditional Medicinals, to name a few. Betsy brought her nutrition knowledge to grocery shoppers as the star of Kroger’s “Eat Healthy, Be Healthy” commercials that ran in 3 major markets. Strong customer loyalty and increased sales resulted from this profitable program, countless supermarket tours, cooking classes, and community events. Her experience building a successful retail dietitian program from scratch makes Betsy a reliable and trusted resource for grocery retailers, manufacturers, public relations firms, and the media.
Betsy holds an undergraduate degree in Dietetics from Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. She later went on to obtain her Masters of Education in Exercise Science from Auburn University Montgomery in Montgomery, Alabama. She is an active member of the American Dietetic Association, Food and Culinary Professionals / Supermarket RD Dietetic Practice Group, and the Virginia Dietetic Association.
Currently residing in the Washington, D.C, area, Betsy is a nutrition and health communications consultant bringing consumers simple solutions from their grocery cart to their plate. She is also a health & nutrition blogger for Northeast Pennsylvania Magazine’s website, NEPAFamily.com. Personally, Betsy is a very busy mom of 2 and devoted wife of a Dietitian/Public Health Officer in the United States Air Force. She cooks dinner for her family almost every night and loves to cycle with her husband. Born and raised in Tennessee, Betsy still loves Christian and country music, SEC football, cornbread, and made from scratch pie.
